One of the astronauts on the Polaris Dawn mission, tech entrepreneur and billionaire Jared Isaacman, has just undertaken the first private spacewalk in history by successfully exiting the Space X Dragon capsule, located 700 kilometers (435 miles) from Earth, at 6:52 a.m. on the East Coast of the United States (10:52 GMT).

After just over forty minutes of final preparations, the ship’s hatch opened and Commander Isaacman emerged, wearing one of the suits from Elon Musk’s company that are being tested on this mission, in which for the first time an astronaut not belonging to a government space agency walks in space.

If all goes well, he will soon be joined by Space X engineer Sarah Gillis, and the two are scheduled to take 15-minute shifts for two hours while the other two crew members, Anna Menon, chief operations engineer and flight medical officer, and pilot Scott Poteet, assist them from the ship.

The Polaris Dawn mission, which took off on Tuesday from Cape Canaveral (Florida), exceeded 1,400 kilometers from Earth yesterday, Wednesday, the farthest manned trip since the Apollo missions more than 50 years ago.
