On this piano, Freddie Mercury composed his greatest songs with Queen, starting with the mythical “Bohemian Rhapsody” which appears on the album A Night at the Opera. Bought by the British singer for a thousand euros in 1975, his quarter-tail Yahama G2 sold for ÂŁ1.742 million, or two million euros, at an auction held on Wednesday evening at Sotheby’s, London. This is a record for an artist’s piano, although it was estimated at ÂŁ2-3 million.
More than an instrument, Freddie Mercury considered it “an extension of himself, his vehicle of creativity“, had declared before the event Mary Austin, the ex-fiancĂ©e of the rocker whom he had made his heiress before his death at the age of 45 in 1991. Sign of respect, “he never smoked on the piano or left a drink on it, making everyone act the same“, he had pointed out. “The piano was always impeccable“.
