9th day of the Bundesliga: Summiteers, Derbyzunder and Alonso debut

Status: 06.10.2022 17:28

The classic Borussia Dortmund against Bayern Munich is once again in the spotlight on Matchday 9 of the Bundesliga. But there are other encounters with potential excitement, such as Bayer Leverkusen against Schalke 04 thanks to the debut of new manager Xabi Alonso or the Rhine derby between Borussia Mönchengladbach and 1. FC Köln.

With live reports of individual matches in the full report, you won’t miss a single goal on sportschau.de.

TSG Hoffenheim v SV Werder Bremen (Friday, 20:30)

Bremer Ballerbude meets the fourth best defense of the league. With 18 goals scored, the North Germans currently have the second best offensive in the league behind FC Bayern (23). For a promoted team, it’s an extraordinary start, but obviously it’s still not a guarantee of staying in the league for the season.

However, Bremen should be happy with this look at history: with 18 goals at this point in the season, only one team is relegated, and it happened a long time ago: 49 years ago it was Hannover 96 in the 1973/74 season. SVW’s man of the hour is Niclas Füllkrug, who leads the Bundesliga top scorer with seven goals. Only Rudi Völler scored more goals than Werder in the 1985/86 season with eight goals.

Bayer Leverkusen – FC Schalke 04 (Saturday, 15:30)

The change of coach in Leverkusen overshadows everything else before this western duel. Xabi Alonso should put Leverkusen back on the road to success that the official club has surprisingly left. The Spaniard wants to hear from the team as soon as possible: “Time is a luxury in football. We have a lot to do, I need to get to know the players and get in touch, find out what the mood is like.”Alonso said at his presentation.

Xabi Alonso feels ready for his first big job as head coach. While the 40-year-old had previously turned down other offers, the commitment to troubled Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen now fits in perfectly with his plan.

Five meager points after eight games: Bayer starts this day with the weakest record in 40 years. Schalke only have one more point on the bill, where manager Frank Kramer is slowly coming under pressure. In all seasons, the former Bielefeld manager has only won three games this year. After Leverkusen, Hoffenheim arrives at Schalke, then in Bochum. At the latest in the Revierderby, Kramer must win so that arguments about him don’t get louder.

FSV Mainz 05 – RB Leipzig (Saturday, 15:30)

Leipzig without goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi, hard to imagine. Since he joined the Bundesliga six years ago, the Hungarian has missed a total of seven Bundesliga games. Curious: he made mistakes exactly once every season, only twice in the 2019/2020 season. It will be a long time before the 32-year-old is back on goal after injuring his cruciate ligament in the game against Celtic Glasgow.

RB Leipzig won their first Champions League match but lost first-choice goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi. The 32-year-old suffered a serious knee injury.

Good for Leipzig and substitute goalkeeper Janis Blaswich: Mainz and scoring goals at home – so far it has not been a good combination this season. Only one goal was scored in front of the home crowd and that was the 7th match day against Hertha BSC in the fourth minute of added time by Anthony Caci. This is obviously too little.

VfL Bochum – Eintracht Frankfurt (Saturday, 15:30)

The Eintracht has only recently known one direction, namely upwards. Neither team has scored more points in their last five Bundesliga games, twelve in fact. From 15th place he climbed to 6th place. And everything speaks for the fact that the chosen direction will be maintained, after all it will go to the bottom of the standings in Bochum.

The turnaround after the change of manager did not materialize there. Under new coach Thomas Letsch, nothing was better at 0: 4 in Leipzig. But that should change to Letsch’s first housewife. After all, the Bochum team doesn’t want to keep expanding their negative record. A point after eight games with a goal difference of minus 18: no club in Bundesliga history has ever been this bad.

Matchday 9: The match will start on October 8, 2022 at 3:30 pm. Eintracht Frankfurt plays in Bochum.

FC Augsburg – VfL Wolfsburg (Saturday, 15:30)

The sun is shining again on football Augsburg. Three wins out of three games like now, three years ago. The FCA has never achieved four wins after eight days in its Bundesliga history: it is under the leadership of new manager Enrico Maassen. And the Augsburgers still like to rethink their last match: on Matchday 28 of the previous season, there was a 3-0 win over the wolves.

However, they have recently shown that they can do better than at the start of the season. Two wins in the last three games (against Stuttgart and Frankfurt). Overall though, there could be a pretty tough fight at their respective gates. Both teams have scored the fewest shots on goal of any team this season: Wolfsburg 85 and Augsburg 77. Both teams have scored eight goals each, the lowest in the league after VfL Bochum.

Borussia Dortmund v Bayern Munich (Saturday, 18:30)

Dortmund versus Bayern – and neither of the top two teams are in first place before this duel. This is an unusual constellation of tables. After all, the two rivals shot warmly for the eternal summit: Bayern with five goals against Pilsen, Dortmund with four goals in Seville.

For the hosts, the change of personnel that has been imminent for some time is felt. Youssoufa Moukoko is expected to replace disappointing new signing Anthony Modeste. BVB coach Edin Terzic gave a long praise to his youngster after his victory in Seville. “He played a really good game”coach Edin Terzic said, but he also put it into perspective: “A good match is not enough! We will tell him to play it more often”. Preferably against Bayern.

But they should enter the top match calmly: FCB have won ten of their last eleven Bundesliga games against Dortmund, there have also recently been seven straight Monaco wins – breaking this streak won’t be easy.

Borussia Mönchengladbach – 1. FC Köln (Sunday, 15:30)

This man should give the Gladbachers a headache: in last season’s second leg, Florian Kainz stood out on the Cologne side with a goal and an assist in the 3-1 win. The Austrian is playing in good form again, he scored two goals in the win against Dortmund and has already scored seven points. Kainz currently occupies fourth place in the league-wide top scorer table.

Matchday 9: The match kicks off on October 9, 2022 at 3:30 pm. 1. FC Cologne play in Mönchengladbach.

Borussia Mönchengladbach’s top scorer is Marcus Thuram, who scored his fourth goal against Bremen and has long since become a fixture under coach Daniel Farke. The Frenchman starts as a left winger with the Foals, Farke uses him as a central striker. “He is still a young player and is just getting used to the role of central striker. He is not yet in Robert Lewandowski’s sphere. If he were, he would probably have 15 goals behind him by now.“Farke said and hopes for a better use of Thuram’s possibilities. Kainz or Thuram – maybe one of those two will aim for the derby ladder on Sunday.

Hertha BSC – SC Freiburg (Sunday, 17:30)

The fact that Michael Gregoritsch now feels very comfortable in Freiburg can be seen from the numbers. The striker had eight shots on goal against Mainz (2-1), equaling not only his personal best in the Bundesliga, but also his season-wide record in the entire league. A total of four goals came out for him. He has already scored four goals against Hertha in his football career, but has never become a winner of a match at his previous clubs against Hertha.

The Austrian only won one match against Hertha BSC with HSV, but was used as a wildcard and only played one minute. If things go better this time around and the Freiburgers take their sixth win of the season, SC Freiburg could very well be the new leaders after Matchday 9. Incidentally, the SCF has never started better: 17 points and five wins mean a record for the club. By the way: Freiburg is also the best away team in the league with three wins and one draw.

VfB Stuttgart – Union Berlin (Sunday, 19:30)

VfB vs Union: this is also the game of the old against the young. This season, the Irons send the team with the second highest average age, 28 years old, to the lawn. Only Bochum is even older – 29.1 years. VfB, on the other hand, returns with its wild young, average age 24.0 years. The Swabians are the youngest team for the third consecutive Bundesliga season.

Young or old, the question arises as to when the Stuttgart team will achieve their first win of the season. The coach Pellegrino Matarazzo especially needs it, and there has been talk for some time about a possible replacement for the VfB. The names Adi Hütter and Sebastian Hoeneß are already touring the Neckar.

To avoid the exchange of coaches, it is above all an increase in performance in the position of goalkeeper. Florian Müller has made a mistake in his last two appearances, having excelled in the 1-1 draw against Bayern. Against Frankfurt (1: 3) he did not make a good impression with two goals conceded, even against Wolfsburg (1: 2) he let a shot by Maximilian Arnold get out of hand.
