92 operations in 12 hours: cleaning up after the storm

After the heavy storms in the night on Wednesday, the clean-up work has started in southern Burgenland. According to the operational map of the Burgenland State Security Center, 92 operations had to be carried out in just 12 hours. The hot spot was southern Burgenland, where a severe storm brewed in the early evening.

Around 4:40 p.m., the forecast storm hit the Jennersdorf district with heavy rain, storms and hail. According to the fire brigade, the towns of Deutsch Kaltenbrunn and Rudersdorf were particularly affected, with around 70 liters of rain per square meter falling in less than 40 minutes. Before the rain a short, but all the more violent storm swept over both towns. Houses were covered and trees were broken like matches.

Due to the heavy rainfall, the sewage system was unable to absorb these masses of water, and several cellars and streets were flooded. In German Kaltenbrunn alone there were more than 50 operational addresses, which were processed with the support of the fire departments from Mogersdorf and Wallendorf. Parts of Deutsch Kaltenbrunn and the surrounding area were without electricity for more than 40 minutes. The reason for this was fallen trees that damaged the overhead lines.

The fire brigade described fire brigades that blocked the streets and cellars that were partially flooded up to one and a half meters high, had to be tackled by the emergency services in both locations. Numerous roads and paths were impassable.

The KURIER reached Martin Ernst, spokesman for the district fire brigade command (BFK) Jennersdorf, on the phone.
