News | The Saturday afternoon of the 18th Bundesliga matchday. Among other things, with Union’s fifth derby win in a row – and Werder, who ended the Wolfsburg soaring for the time being.
Last Wednesday, Mainz 05 needed less than two minutes to take the lead against Borussia Dortmund – this time it was only around 40 seconds. Karim Onisiwo came over the right and crossed sharply into the middle. Jae-Sung Lee narrowly missed. However, the hosts stayed in the situation. Anthony Caci served from the left this time, Lee pushed in from close range. Guido Winkmann and Michael Emmer checked the goal for an offside position, which did not materialize. 1:0!
A good ten minutes later, Borussia Mönchengladbach was able to counterattack in Sinsheim. Christoph Kramer took Lars Stindl with him in midfield, who played a precise lateral transfer half-right into the penalty area to Jonas Hofmann. The national player hit the short corner from a good ten meters. 0:1!
Just a minute later, the sports club also struck against FC Augsburg. Michael Gregoritsch appeared on the left after a pass from Yannik Keitel and shot it himself from a tight angle. The ball went over the line over the right inner post.
At Mainz, the question arose as to what they would do with their own leadership this time. Against BVB they conceded the immediate compensation. After 18 minutes, Silvan Widmer increased. The starting point was Dominik Kohr winning the ball against ex-Mainz player Pierre Kunde, allowing the hosts to play the game quickly. Onisiwo left Ivan Ordets on the flank, but lost the duel against Anthony Losilla. Nevertheless, the ball landed on the left in the six-yard box at Silvan Widmer, who easily pushed in the bottom right. 2:0!
A good 20 minutes had been played in Bremen when Yannick Gerhardt caught the ball in the center of the penalty area and his extended arm. The game went on for now. Shortly thereafter, Daniel Siebert consulted Günter Perl and Markus Schüller in Cologne – and pointed to the point. The penalty was called Niclas Füllkrug and landed confidently in the right corner.
Höler counters Berisha, VfL Bochum falls apart
The next penalty came before the half-hour mark, this time in Freiburg. Lukas Kübler came too late in the duel with Ermedin Demirović and brought down the Augsburger. Mergim Berisha stepped up and also slotted in on the right. Mark Flekken was in the other corner. 1:1!
However, the glory of Augsburg lasted only a few seconds. Philipp Lienhart sent Gregoritsch down the left flank from the start. In the penalty area, Ritsu Doan put it over again for Lucas Höler, who only had to push in.
Meanwhile, Mainz 05 proved extremely efficient: 28 minutes: Kevin Stöger played a back pass to Danilo Soares that was far too short. Karim Onisiwo intervened, moved in the direction of the goal and chipped past Manuel Riemann to make it 3-0.
In the 37th minute, the next Gladbach move came from Stindl, who used Jonas Hofmann on the Hoffenheim defense. Newcomer John-Anthony Brooks intervened, but was only able to clarify insufficiently. The ball flipped over Stanley Nsoki back to Hofmann, who made it 0:2 from a good 14 meters down the right. First, Benjamin Brand ruled offside. Then the High Council of Benjamin Cortus and Markus Sinn met in Cologne. The goal came a few minutes later because Hofmann was not in the forbidden zone when Stindl passed the ball.
The final action of the first half belonged to Union in the Berlin derby – and it was a house style. 44 minutes: Christopher Trimmel brings a free kick into the centre. Danilho Doekhi climbed up and gave Oliver Christensen no chance in the Hertha goal. Third goal in third game of 2023 for Union centre-back.

Gladbach makes it clear, Onisiwo three times – and Berlin stays red
1. FSV Mainz 05 also opened the second half, but this time after 57 minutes, not 40 seconds. Kunde gave up the ball again, this time against Leandro Barreiro. The Luxembourger put through to Karim Onisiwo, who pushed into the far corner. 4-0
In the Berlin derby, Hertha showed a little more pressure after the break. But Union had the more effective actions. One of them in minute 67: Rani Khedira got the ball against Marc-Oliver Kempf. Sheraldo Becker accelerated from the left and served Paul Seguin in the penalty area, who only had to push into an empty goal. 0:2
So back to Mainz, where Pierre Kunde was the focus again. 70th minute, the hosts couldn’t clear the ball. Takuma Asano fielded Anthony Losilla. Bochum’s captain saw Kunde on the right, who hit hard under the crossbar. 1:4
Two minutes later, Kunde hit a corner on the first post. From Edimilson Fernandes, this bounced to Erhan Mašović, who somehow poked over the line. 2:4 only!
The game in Bremen promised less tension. 77 minutes: Niclas Füllkrug headed the ball to Eren Dinkci from the left side of the penalty area, who crossed to the far post. There Mitchell Weiser also put the ball back to Füllkrug, who completed the shot directly into the middle of the goal. 2:0! VfL Wolfsburg conceded twice as many goals in one game as in the previous six Bundesliga duels.
Ten minutes before the end, TSG became more offensively present. Finn Ole Becker was allowed to run into the penalty area from the left and pull the ball to the second post. Christoph Baumgartner put his head across again, so that Ihlas Bebou only had to push in. Connection.
However, Hoffenheim advanced too far in the minutes that followed. Joe Scally ran down the right baseline and pushed to Lars Stindl in the center. After two assists, the captain did it himself and deliberately hit the inside corner from six meters into the right corner. 1:3
SC Freiburg made everything clear five minutes before the end: Philipp Lienhart headed in a free-standing Grifo corner kick to make it 3-1.
So back to Mainz, where it was still not clear in which direction the game should tip. 87 minutes: Aymen Barkok puts through for Karim Onisiwo, who completed his hat-trick from 17 yards out at right angles.
With the final siren, VfL Wolfsburg came again: double goal scorer Füllkrug cleared a corner kick from Maximilian Arnold right on the edge of the penalty area. There stood Kevin Paredes, who immediately grabbed the left hand. Jiří Pavlenka slipped the ball through. The ball landed to the right of the post.
Just a minute later, Gladbach made things very clear: Alassane Pléa conquered the ball against Ozan Kabak. Luca Netz entered the penalty area on the left via Manu Koné. Substitute Hannes Wolf pushed in at the second post to make it 1:4. The results.
