83 Percent of People Cancel Travel Plans 3 Months Ago, Because Hospital Services Are Paralyzed

AKURAT.CO A survey by the Institute for Demographic and Poverty Studies (IDEAS) research institute revealed that fear of contracting Covid-19 made 83.7 percent of people cancel their travel plans at the peak of the second wave, last July 2021.

“This concern has also caused 80.1 percent of respondents to have refused invitations to get-togethers or social gatherings, and even refused the arrival of people who wanted to visit their homes,” said IDEAS Director Yusuf Wibisono in a written statement on Wednesday (15/09/2021) .

Yusuf added that in the last 3 months, fears of contracting the Covid-19 virus made 87.9 percent of respondents admit to having worn double medical masks or tighter personal protective equipment when in public places.

The survey on the pandemic insecurity experience was held by IDEAS online on 29 July–30 August 2021 and managed to get 1,764 respondents spread across 33 provinces and 209 regencies and cities.

However, the survey is dominated by the middle class, namely 88.2 percent of respondents with education above high school (diploma, S1 and S2-S3) and 45.2 percent of respondents with an average income of more than IDR 5 million per month.

And dominated by urban Javanese communities where 87.1 percent of respondents live in Java with 57.7 percent of them located in Greater Jakarta.

“The findings of our survey show that the fears of contracting the virus that people feel in the midst of an uncontrolled pandemic are real and serious,” said Yusuf.

In the pandemic insecurity experience scale developed by IDEAS, the public’s concern about contracting the virus in the midst of an uncontrolled pandemic is measured by 3 indicators.

The indicators include wearing tighter personal protective equipment in public places, canceling travel plans and refusing invitations to social gatherings. With these 3 indicators, the public’s concern about contracting the Covid-19 virus in the midst of the second wave has been very strongly confirmed.
