Planets have roots Planets from the Greek word meaning ‘wanderer’ which in ancient times referred to the Sun, Moon, and five visible objects as points of light moving across a background of stars. There are at least eight planets in the Solar System namely the terrestrial planet Mercury, Venus, Earth and Marsand the giant planets Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.
In our solar system, Earth or as it was once called gaia previously still judged in terms of heliocentrism replacing geocentrism during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. As a result of the development of technology, it was finally revealed that, in fact, it was not the sun that revolved around the earth. But the earth revolves around the sun.

1. Mercurius
Mercury is the closest planet to the sun and the smallest planet in the solar system. This planet has a size slightly larger than the moon which is a satellite of planet Earth.
This planet rotates around the sun in just 88 days due to its relatively close distance to the sun (about two-fifths the distance between Earth and the sun).
This small planet is not like Earth, which changes seasons in a relatively long period of time, this one planet experiences drastic temperature changes every day and night. Mercury can reach 840 F (450 C) during the day. This temperature is hot enough to melt lead.
Meanwhile at night the temperature drops to minus 290 F (minus 180 C) which can freeze anything.
Mercury’s atmosphere is relatively thin compared to other planets and consists mainly of oxygen, sodium, hydrogen, helium, and potassium. The surface of the planet is also filled with craters, like the surface of the moon.
In addition, NASA’s MESSENGER spacecraft, which has been on a flight mission for 4 years, also revealed an extraordinary discovery that tested the minds of astronomers. Among the findings were the discovery of ice and frozen organic compounds at Mercury’s north pole and the discovery that volcanic eruptions played a major role in shaping the planet’s surface.
2. VENUS
Venus is the second planet from the sun and is the hottest planet in the solar system. Its thick atmosphere is highly toxic and consists of clouds of sulfuric acid. This planet can also be considered as an extreme example of greenhouse effect.
The average temperature on the surface of Venus is 900 F or 465 C. The pressure on the surface on Mars reaches 62 bar and can destroy the human body in an instant.
In addition, Venus rotates in a unique way, rotating slowly from east to west, in the opposite direction to most of the other planets.
Venus is often referred to as Earth’s twin because of its similar size and under its atmosphere revealing many mountains and volcanoes.
In Greek belief, Venus manifests as two objects, one in the morning sky and one in the evening. In addition, Venus is also a planet with UFO reports (Unidentified Flying Object) the most.
3. EARTH
Earth, our home, is the third planet from the sun. Earth is a water planet that covers two-thirds of the atmosphere. Earth’s atmosphere is also rich in nitrogen and oxygen and is the only planet known to have life.
The Earth rotates on its axis at 1,532 feet per second (467 meters per second) at the equator. The planet orbits the sun at over 18 miles per second (29 km per second).

4. MARS
Mars is the fourth planet from the sun. Mars is more appropriately called a ‘desert’ planet covered in iron oxide dust. This planet has a distinctive red color on this planet.
Mars has several things in common with Earth, namely rocky, has mountains, valleys and canyons, and many storms ranging from dust devil from tornadoes to dust storms that hit the planet.
Scientific evidence suggests that Mars was once a much warmer, wetter planet, rivers and maybe even oceans existed.
Although the Martian atmosphere is too thin for water to remain on the surface for long, the ‘wet’ remnants of Mars still exist today.
On the planet there is also a layer of water ice the size of California located below the surface of Mars, and at both poles there is a layer of ice made from frozen water.
Scientists also think ancient Mars would have had the conditions to support life like bacteria and other microbes.
Scientists also see and predict that there are signs of past life on this planet. Because of this, Mars is the planet most frequently explored by humans in this solar system.
5. JUPITER
Jupiter is the fifth planet from the sun and the largest planet in the solar system. The ‘gas giant’ planet is also twice as large as all the other planets combined, according to NASA.
The planet is also surrounded by colorful swirling clouds of various gases.
One thing that’s phenomenal about Jupiter’s swirling clouds is Jupiter’s Great Red Spot, a giant storm more than 10,000 miles wide. This phenomenon was first seen in 1831 by Samuel Heinrich Schwabe. This storm has also been raging at over 400 mph for the last 150 years.
Jupiter is a planet that has a strong magnetic field and has 75 moons including the largest moon in the solar system, Ganymede.
6. SATURN
Saturn is the sixth planet from the sun and is famous for the ‘rings’ that revolve around the planet. on this planet there are at least 82 known natural satellites orbiting Saturn and of them have received official names.
Titan, Saturn’s largest natural satellite and the second largest natural satellite in the Solar System, has a diameter larger than Mercury, but Titan’s mass is less than that of Mercury. Titan is also the only natural satellite in the Solar System that has a thick atmosphere
One of the famous figures who studied the planet was Galileo Galilei. At first, he thought it was an object with three parts: a planet and two large moons on either side. This happened because he did not know that he saw a planet with rings.
More than 40 years later, Christiaan Huygens proposed that they were rings.

7. URANUS
Uranus is the seventh planet from the sun and is more visible as a giant ‘rock’ orbiting the sun.
The planet has clouds made of hydrogen sulfide, a chemical that smells like rotten eggs.
Uranus rotates from east to west like Venus. But unlike Venus or other planets, its equator is almost perpendicular to its orbit and orbits on the planet’s side.
Astronomers believe an object twice the size of Earth collided with Uranus about 4 billion years ago and caused the axis of Uranus to tilt. That tilt causes extreme seasons that last more than 20 years and the sun sets at one pole or another for 84 Earth years at a time.
The collision is also thought to have dropped rock and ice into Uranus’ orbit. These later turned into some of the planet’s 27 moons.
Methane in Uranus’ atmosphere gives the planet its blue-green color. It also has 13 sets of cryptic rings.
Uranus holds the record for the coldest temperature ever measured in the solar system – minus 371.56 degrees F (minus 224.2 degrees C). The average temperature of Uranus is minus 320 degrees Fahrenheit (-195 degrees Celsius).
8. NEPTUNE
Neptune is roughly the same size as Uranus and is known for its supersonic strong winds. This planet is 30 times the distance from the sun to Earth.
The composition of the planet is very similar to that of Uranus. Neptune’s atmosphere contains hydrogen, helium, hydrocarbons, possibly nitrogen, and large amounts of ‘ices’ such as water ice, ammonia, and methane.
Astronomers often categorize Neptune as an ‘ice giant’ to emphasize the difference. Not much different from Uranus, Neptune’s interior consists of ice and rock. Methane in the planet’s outer regions is one of the causes of Neptune’s bluish appearance
Neptune was the first planet that was predicted to exist using mathematics, instead of being detected visually. German astronomer Johann Galle used calculations to help locate Neptune in a telescope. Neptune is about 17 times larger than Earth and has a rocky core.
