8-M feminist strike: schedules, demonstrations and other acts of protest

The protest day on the occasion of Women’s Day of 8-M will take place this Friday with mobilizations and protests throughout Spain that will start from midnight on Thursday. The act that is expected to be the most massive: the demonstration that will start at 7pm from the Atocha station in Madrid.

Feminist organizations and unions have called for a 24-hour labor, student and care strike – CNT and CGT – and 2-hour stoppages per shift – UGT and CCOO – for this Friday, March 8, but there are also plans for casseroles, events claims and demonstrations throughout Spain.

Madrid: central demonstration at 7pm

The acts of 8-M will start from a day earlier in different parts of the capital. On the night of 7-M there will be a “night march of women, buns and trans” in the Plaza de Ópera and at 9:30 p.m. a pan that will start in the Aluche metro plaza until midnight in Alto de Extremadura, among other acts. But not only in the capital. Leganés, Rivas Vaciamadrid and other nearby towns have also prepared to take the pan by the handle.

From the first hour of Friday a “bicipiquete” will start to encourage the workers to join the feminist strike.

At noon on Friday at the Puerta del Sol the gathering of the Student Union will take place and an hour later the media professionals will meet in the Plaza del Museo Reina to read the manifesto “For a dignified journalism and feminist”.

The reading of protest texts will be disseminated in all districts between 12 noon and 1 pm as can be seen in detail in the program of the website to support the feminist strike created by the 8-M Commission.

At 7:00 pm the central act of the day will take place, which is expected to be more crowded given that the call for the previous year overflowed: the demonstration that will run from Atocha to the Plaza de España.

Unions have agreed with the Community of Madrid on minimum services ranging from 20% to 100% -in the case of medical transport-, being 60% in the case of the Metro and 30% in the EMT. The teaching staff has not been designated as minimum services, so it is expected that in many schools the classrooms will be closed due to the high number of teachers who teach their work and could support the strike.

Barcelona

The student concentration is also scheduled for noon, at 12 noon in the Plaza de la Universidad.

While the main march of Barcelona will start from different points to come together in a ‘Final act’ in Plaza Catalunya at 8:00 p.m. where the 8-M manifesto and different performances will take place.

Seville

The first major mobilization will take place in the morning outside the courthouse door. At noon, the Student Union will focus on the Mushrooms and the central demonstration will start at 18:30 from the Torre de Pelli.

Valencia

Again at 12h the students will meet in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento and at 18h the main march will start with different headwaters.

Bilbao

In this case the student march will be at 11am in the Plaza del Arriaga and the main demonstration will leave the Plaza del Sagrado Corazón at 7pm.

These are just the main examples, but there are hundreds of cities and towns called to support this feminist journey as detailed on the map of the 8-M Commission:
