According to the blog specializing in new technologies Gizmodo, 70,000 photos of Tinder users have been posted recently on a forum specialized in cybercrime.

These snapshots are believed to belong to 16,000 users, only women, and are likely to be reused to create fake profiles in order to scam other users. The hypothesis that a company has sponsored this flight to develop or improve facial recognition software is also studied. According to the blog, this would not be the first time this has happened.

The photos are fairly recent, some even being precisely dated last October. The phone models used for selfies also help to assess the era when the pictures were taken.

Contacted by Gizmodo following the incident, a Tinder spokesperson said the company had taken steps to prevent this type of incident from happening again in the future. “We work hard to keep our members’ information secure,” he explains. “We are constantly working to identify and implement new tools that make this kind of violation more difficult to achieve.”
