“70% of the virus is transmitted by air” – inside news:

Faced with the resurgence of tested positive cases of the Covid-19 pandemic, in Mauritius, our compatriot, Dr Omila Ramphul Daul has kindly agreed to intervene on the columns of Inside News and the airwaves of Wazaa FM.Nour compatriot is categorical. “The virus is in the air. 70% of the virus is transmitted by air. Mauritians must redouble their efforts to respect the barriers: wearing a mask, social distancing of one meter between two people, disinfecting their hands with sanitizer … Also, we are told that we should not put more than six at a table ”, she asserts.

Continuing her intervention, she shed some light on the choice of vaccines and the preventive measures to be taken to contain the virus. Very concerned by the scale of the pandemic in the country, Dr Ramphul Daul, Chief Physician of the MPR service, president of the CME (Pole Medical Committee) and president of the CLIN [Comité de lutte contre les maladies Nosocomiales ( Covid )] in France insists that we must start with the concepts of vaccines.

It identifies three categories: (i) messenger RNA technology; (ii) viral vector vaccines and (iii) inactivated virus. “In the case of Pfizer and Moderna, it’s called the messenger RNA category. It is the cell of a genetic envelope in an RNA-DNA material. The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are made from RNA cells, which are transformed before they are given to people. They strengthen the immune system of the person. Pfizer and Moderna are very interesting. They give us a clinical success rate of 94-95% ”

The second type of vaccine is that with a viral vector. “This category includes AstraZeneca and Sputnik. In the case of these types of vaccines, it is established that the virus has been killed, only the shell of the virus has been preserved to make vaccines. When administered to humans, anti-bodies are developed ”, explains Dr Omila Ramphul Daul.

The third category of vaccines, called Inactivated Viruses, is that the Covid-19 virus has been rendered inactive. Do this by removing two or three nasty elements. This resulted in Sinopharma and Sinovax, Chinese vaccines, she says.

“Which brings us back to that point, to clinical efficacy. Because of this, Pfizer and moderna are effective at 94-95% of the success rate. Sputnik is positioned with 91% of the success rate and AstraZeneca is positioned with 82% of the success rate ”, says Dr Ramphul Daul before adding: “The important thing is the percentage with which the virus boosts the human body to produce antibodies.”

Regarding the controversy around the AstraZeneca, a problem raised in Europe, including Norway, Italy, France, our interlocutor sheds some light. “Today in France we have three themes that raise scientific questions: Can AstraZeneca be administered to people over 65? Can AstraZeneca be injected into a person suffering from several diseases (diabetes, hypertension, stroke…) or chronic pathologies? The field has shown us that there are certain problems of ‘clotting’ of blood which arise ”, she says.

So, Dr Ramphul Daul explains that every time a vaccine is in phase 3, there are questions or things that happen. Expressing certain reservations about the injection of AstraZeneca on the elderly, suffering from diseases such as thrombotic, or thromboembolic, blood thinning … Dr Ramphul Daul underlines: France continues to inject AstraZeneca for people who do not show chronic conditions.

Maurice’s salvation, she says, is vaccination. She joins health professionals to say that 60% of the population must be vaccinated before considering opening the borders. Dr Ramphul Daul refers to the medical magazine The Lancet to say that a vaccine aims to decrease the penetrance force of the virus.

Recalling that two years ago, the world was hit by the pandemic, she agrees that we cannot confine a population for a long time. “We must reduce the psychological tension on the population and a policy with clear and precise information. Otherwise, there are risks ”, maintains Dr Omila Ramphul Daul.
