70% of intensive care beds in the North are already occupied

The occupancy of beds dedicated to covid-19 in northern hospitals reached 61% in the middle of this week, in the nursing room and 70% in the case of intensive care, according to the Regional Health Administration.

In a written response sent to Lusa, the Regional Health Administration of the North (ARS-N) said that hospitals in the region have 464 infirmary beds dedicated to covid-19, of which 285 were occupied on Wednesday (about 61%).

In the Intensive Care Units (ICU), of the 81 beds allocated to the disease, 57 were occupied on the same day, which corresponds to an occupation of about 70%.

According to ARS-N, in this region the installed capacity for all pathologies is 5,489 infirmary beds and 308 intensive care beds, in a total of 16 health facilities (nine hospital centers, four hospitals and three local health units).

The covid-19 pandemic has already claimed more than 1.1 million deaths and an additional 39.3 million cases of infection worldwide, according to a report by the French agency AFP.

In Portugal, 2,162 people died from 98,055 confirmed cases of infection, according to the most recent bulletin from the Directorate-General for Health.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected in late December 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China.

After Europe succeeded China as the center of the pandemic in February, the American continent is now the one with the most confirmed cases and the most deaths.
