During a family reunion, seven family members contracted the coronavirus. A mother and three of her children have already died.
73-year-old Grace Fusco and six of her eleven children tested positive for the coronavirus last week after having all attended a large family gathering, such as “New York Times” reported. Grace Fusco died Wednesday in the Pennsylvania hospital, just hours after the death of her older son Carmine and four days after her daughter Rita Fusco-Jackson, 55, died. Grace’s son Vincent also died on Thursday of complications from Covid-19.
Nobody goes to the funeral service
The last two days before her death, Grace Fusco was connected to a respirator, says her cousin Paradiso Fodera. The mother never found out that two of her children had died when she was in the hospital. Three more of Grace’s children are currently in the hospital, two of whom are in critical condition, relatives said.
In the meantime, 20 other relatives of the Fuscos have gone into self-quarantine – including Paradiso Fodera. They cannot attend their family members’ funeral service. “Why do we have to wait so long to be tested?” The woman is annoyed. This is a sign of the health crisis that the United States is experiencing, she says. “A large part of the family has now been decimated by this virus.”
The Corona crisis hits the U.S. East Coast hard: New York governor Andrew Cuomo announced emergency measures on Saturday. Up to 75,000 additional hospital beds are to be made available, as well as two million protective masks and 6000 vital respiratory devices.
The number of infections with the Sars-CoV-2 pathogen has risen to over 10,350 cases in New York State. The government in Washington has declared a disaster for the state.
