7 Causes of Hair Loss and How to Overcome Them Page all

1. Low protein intake

According to National Institutes of Health, women between the ages of 19 and 50 should get 18 mg of iron per day, and women 51 and over should get 8 mg per day.

To meet your iron intake, don’t rush to find supplements. Cochran does not recommend taking iron supplements without a proven iron deficiency diagnosed by a doctor.

Instead, add iron-rich foods to your diet. These include sweet potatoes, soybeans, pumpkin, lentils, and spinach.

3. High stress

Situations that make you feel stressed, such as a load of work, the loss of a loved one or a threatening doctor’s diagnosis can trigger hair loss, even weeks after the triggering event occurs.

“Extreme stress can cause hair loss six weeks to three months after a stressful event,” says Elizabeth B. Houshmand, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in Dallas, Texas.

The good news is that most hair will grow back normally once the stress has subsided, although it may take up to a year.

4. Styling hair with heat

Using heating tools to style hair such as hair dryer, straightening or curling hair is also a factor in hair loss.

According to Dr. Houshmand, certain medications, including blood pressure medications, can cause hair loss.
