600 comic book authors call for a boycott of the 48th edition

ANGOULEME FESTIVAL – While the 48th edition will take place in two stages due to the Covid, some 600 authors are threatening to boycott the second part of the festival, open to the public in June.

[Mis à jour le 27 janvier 2021 à 18h35] While the Angoulême festival awards ceremony takes place this Friday, January 29 in the large hall of the Angoulême theater in a small group, broadcast live on the antennas and the site of France Inter, the 48th edition of the international comic strip festival will take place for the general public on staggered dates. It’s a first for 48 years, en due to the Covid-19 health crisis …

The meeting point for lovers of the ninth art, postponed June 24-27, 2021, however, will not go without a hitch. Nearly 600 comic book authors, fighting against the precariousness of the profession, want to take advantage of the event to question the status of authors, 50% of whom live below the poverty line, earning less than the minimum wage … A malaise all the more aggravated by the epidemic of the coronavirus. These authors also question reforms that are slow to arrive.

“We will not go to the ceremony, or to the festival in June, if nothing happens. We took advantage of the Covid to bury the promises Macron made to us last year when coming to Angoulême. The pandemic is not Not an excuse. On the contrary: we could have taken advantage of this time to sit down and discuss, considers the latter. The anger is there. We can no longer continue to play the game of the festival, even if we are well aware that it is not responsible for the situation. But it is a showcase and a way for us to be able to be listened to “, explain to the Parisian the authors and comic writers Gwen de Bonneval and Fabien Vehlmann, authors of the series The Last Atlas whose volume 2 appears in the 2021 selection of the Angoulême Festival.

The Autrices-Auteurs en action collective has for its part published a call for boycott : “We, the signatory authors and authors will apply the total boycott of the public side of the Angoulême Festival, next June, if no real and concrete act is taken by then, with regard to our professional status, to our representation and a fair rebalancing of the Book chain, of which the State and your government cannot remain mere observers “, bringing together to date nearly 665 signatures.

The Grand Prix of the Angoulême International Comics Festival, the ultimate reward for a comic book author, following a vote of 1,200 authors, is awarded during the official opening ceremony of the Festival, June 24, 2021.

Last year, Emmanuel Guibert won it, and it will be an opportunity to discover the exhibition dedicated to him in June 2021. He is particularly known for his youth series including The sardine from space or The teacher’s daughter in collaboration with Joann Sfar. His early career had been more marked by works inspired by history such as Brown, a work that depicts the rise of Nazism, then Alan’s War, a series of comics about an American soldier who arrived on European soil in early 1945.

Between 2003 and 2006, the series of three documentary comic books The photograph (published by Dupuis), mixes his drawings with photographs by Didier Lefèvre which tell the story of a humanitarian mission in Afghanistan in 1986. Emmanuel Guibert was recently awarded the Prix Goscinny in Angoulême in 2017 and in January 2018, the Festival international comic strip had already devoted an exhibition to him. “Each of his albums is a divine surprise “ summarized the French journalist specializing in comics Patrick Gaumer.

Emmanuel Guibert was in 2020 in competition with the French Catherine Meurisse and the American Chris Ware. In 2019, it’s the Japanese Rumiko Takahashi, nicknamed the “Manga Princess” and author of Maison Ikkoku (Juliet i love you) and Ranma 1/2, which won the award.

The official poster of this double 2021 edition is signed by Chloé Wary and Willy Ohm, an original duo with complementary visions. Like the 48th edition of the Festival, the poster was designed in two parts:

In 2020, three artists of different nationalities signed the posters for the famous comic strip festival: the Japanese Rumiko Takahashi, winner of the 2019 Grand Prix, the American Charles Burns and the French Catherine Meurisse. The theme common to these illustrations is that of “the self-portrait of the artist as a child, discovering the comic strip (s) founding his passion, even his vocation”.
