Storm Elliott threatens to ruin Christmas for many Americans. Yesterday 5,200 flights were canceled and one and a half million families were left without electricity. The media are talking about an “Arctic explosion”.
Elliott is unusually large: the storm covers an area from Texas to Maine, about 3200 kilometers. Nearly two-thirds of Americans suffered from extreme weather conditions. “We had ice, flooding, snow, sub-zero temperatures and whatever else Mother Nature could throw at us this weekend,” New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) said at a news conference yesterday.
The mercury column dropped rapidly: on Thursday it went from +5 to -23 degrees in Colorado and in Cheyenne and in Wyoming the temperature even dropped by 22 degrees in one hour: from +6 to -16. In Havre, Montana it was the coldest with -39 degrees.
Even today dozens of trains are not running and visibility on many roads is practically zero. Americans are therefore urgently asked to stay at home, which puts a big damper on the joy of Christmas.
