6 Tips for Overcoming Mental Health Disorders, to Keep Yourself “Sane” During a Pandemic

TABLOIDBINTANG.COM – The situation during the Covid-19 pandemic affects many aspects of life, including mental health. According to a UNICEF survey, people’s mental health during the pandemic is disrupted, due to restrictions on activities during the pandemic which result in sudden and drastic changes.

Mental health issues are also a crucial topic in this period of pagebluk. In Indonesia in particular, the condition of people experiencing mental health threats has increased rapidly since several months after the first Covid-19 sufferers emerged.

From the beginning of the pandemic in March to mid-June 2020, the number of people with mental health problems increased by more than 40% compared to 2019. Then in 2021, mental health issues are increasingly becoming a serious problem, considering that the pandemic has not yet ended.

Although some regions have relaxed PPKM regulations due to lower levels, it does not mean that people can freely carry out their activities as usual. The holiday agenda to restore or relieve the psychological burden is not necessarily something that everyone can do.

The reason is, the spread of the Covid-19 virus is still unpredictable. The risk of being exposed to the Corona virus is still there and is high, especially for people who have not received a complete vaccination.

But there’s no need to panic. There are still ways that can be done from home alone. In fact, these ways can improve the quality of life and allow us to enjoy the situation more, even though the pandemic is not over yet.

Love yourself

The Ministry of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection (KemenPPPA) conveyed a response about the solution to maintaining mental health during the Covid-19 pandemic, namely by loving yourself.

By loving oneself, humans will be able to maintain mental health, strengthen the body’s immune system, to grow into a strong person.

When humans can love themselves, especially children, they can accept all the advantages without feeling arrogant. On the other hand, they are also generous to embrace all their shortcomings without being covered up.

Budi Mardaya, Assistant Deputy for Policy Formulation for Special Child Protection at the Ministry of PPPA, explained that loving yourself must be wholeheartedly and unconditionally.

Loving yourself means believing in your abilities, being kind to yourself, and being willing to forgive yourself when you do something bad to yourself.

Loving ourselves, continued Budi, is very important so that we can live happier, safer, and more comfortable lives and can strengthen the body’s immune system. For this reason, self-love needs to be instilled from an early age.

By instilling it early, children will grow up to be competitive individuals, because they understand their strengths and weaknesses. Loving yourself is a journey and a struggle for everyone.

Add activities at home

To prevent mental disorders during the Covid-19 pandemic, there are recommendations to increase activities at home and not just rely on one activity. There are many kinds of activities that can be done at home, to increase busyness and avoid mental disorders.

For example, by cooking, accessing social media, caring for ornamental plants, conducting online meetings, and other productive activities. Because, those whose activities are diverse, are more flexible in living life and are able to survive the adversity of circumstances. This can create a person who has a strong mentality.

Listen to songs

Psychologist Emmeline Edwards says music therapy can be a good way to relax wherever you are. Edwards explains, hearing is connected to other areas of the brain that are connected to the reward system, motor system, the center of motivation, and emotion regulation.

In addition, additional advice came from a psychiatrist named Marlynn Wei. He suggests listening to music while drinking a cup of hot tea as a way to relieve stress in order to maintain mental health.

This mindfulness practice helps us avoid other distracting thoughts. In fact, research shows that music can help people deal with stress-related disorders, mild depression, and anxiety.

Regarding mental health, make it a habit to say positive things to yourself every day. Say these words in front of a mirror so you can see yourself to provide positive stimulation. As a result, these positive words will make you more optimistic and able to improve your mood.

Maintain communication

Humans are social creatures. Limited physical interaction can greatly affect mental health conditions because it makes you feel unable to socialize.

But keep in mind, socialization can still be done without having to meet physically. Always make time to chat with family and maintain communication and relationships with friends.

Don’t forget to tell stories, tell what you are feeling to someone you trust, express your feelings so you don’t get buried and become a mental illness. Believe me, when we tell someone, we will feel understood and live a sense of being human.
