6 Papuan Yalimo Facts That Travel Everywhere

A group of mobs carried out arson and vandalized a number of government offices in the district Yalimo, Papua, last week. The Yalimo area was smoldering, besides the airport and roads were also closed.

1. Police Meet Religious Figures-Yalimo Community

Riots occurred in Yalimo, Papua, as a result of dissatisfaction with the Constitutional Court’s decision. The police also met with a number of religious leaders and Yalimo community leaders to discuss the situation.

The Head of Public Relations of the Papua Police, Kombes Ahmad Musthofa Kamal, said the meeting was held today. Yalimo Police Chief AKBP Hesman S Napitupulu accompanied by Karangka Kodim Major Inf Tri Fachriansyah met religious leaders and Yalimo community leaders in Elelim District.

“The Yalimo Police Chief and his personnel carry out patrols around the Elelim District and conduct monitoring at several incident locations. Furthermore, the Yalimo Police Chief, Pabung Kodim Karangka, religious leaders and community leaders held a meeting to discuss the situation,” Kamal said in a written statement, Wednesday (30 /6).

Kamal said the TNI-Polri continued to try to prevent victims by securing the community to their respective posts. Meetings with religious and community leaders were also held to calm the residents.

“Yesterday, the leaders tried to meet with the community and calm the masses, but anarchy was unavoidable,” he said.

2. 100 Police Deployed to Open Airport-Road in Yalimo

A group of people who are supporters of a candidate pair in Yalimo Regency, Papua, closed the road and airport access because they did not accept the Constitutional Court’s decision. The blockade that has been implemented since Tuesday (29/6) afternoon has now been opened.

The Head of Public Relations of the Papua Police, Kombes Ahmad Mustofa Kamal, said the police had succeeded in opening the road block. He claims the current situation is conducive.

“Yes (the road block) has been opened, it’s clear,” said Kamal when asked for confirmation, Thursday (1/7/2021).

Kamal explained that the police had to deploy 2 platoons of troops to open the access closure. It is known, 1 platoon contains 30-50 people, which means a maximum of 100 troop personnel deployed to Yalimo.

“The 2nd platoon team arrived in Yalimo,” he said.
