514 PMI Blood Bags Infected with Infectious Diseases, HIV to Syphilis

Surabaya

A total of 514 blood bags at PMI Surabaya were infected with infectious diseases. As a result, the 514 bags of blood had to be discarded.

The Head of Service and Public Relations of UDD PMI Surabaya, Dr. Wandai Rasoetedja, explained that during the period from January to June 2022, his party received around 66,274 thousand bags of blood.

“Of this number, 514 bags of blood are known to be infected with infectious diseases,” said Dr. Wandai when contacted, Friday (22/7/2022).

Of the 514 bags, the blood was infected with infectious diseases. In detail, 213 bags of blood were infected with Hepatitis B. Then 139 bags of blood were infected with Hepatitis C, 110 bags of blood were infected with syphilis, and 52 bags of blood were infected with HIV.

dr Wandai said the blood bag infected with the infectious disease was discovered after an examination. Namely Infections Transmitted Through Blood Transfusion (IMLTD) which is done after blood is taken from a donor.

“When the blood has been taken, several examinations will be carried out, including those related to blood type, antibody screening, and IMLTD examination,” he explained.

With a screening IMLTD examination, no matter how small the virus can be detected. If the results of the IMLTD are declared reactive, the blood will be quarantined first.

“So, if the result is positive, the blood bag will be separated from other blood stocks and will be disposed of,” he said.

After that, PMI will make a call to the donor. In particular, inspections are carried out three times a month for three months.

“A total of nine examinations. If all three are negative, then they can donate again,” he concluded.
