Joshua Cheptegei broke the 5000m world record on Friday in Monaco!

The Ugandan demonstrated to win in 12’35”36, improving by 1”99 the former best mark held by legendary Kenenisa Bekele (12’37”35).

Reigning world champion in the 10,000m, Joshua Cheptegei has yet left alone in the 3,000m. But he did not waver. Encouraged by Julien Wanders (10th in 13’49”85) – who crossed the finish line just after him but with one lap late – the Ugandan pulled out to erase a record that dated from 2004.

His achievement is all the more remarkable given that Joshua Cheptegei (24 years old) arrived in Monaco after a journey of some 80 hours that began by car in Uganda! On Friday, he beat runner-up Nicholas Kimelo by almost 16 seconds to claim a third world record after those in the 5 km and 10 km on the road.

The performances of choice were inevitably linked for this first “real” meeting of the season. No less than ten best world performances of the year were recorded, while 14 events were on the program in the Principality. Karsten Warholm hit particularly hard, setting the 8th time in history over 400m hurdles with 47”10.

The American Noah Lyles (19”76 over 200m), his compatriots Donovan Brazier (1’43”15 over 800m) and Lynna Irby (50”50 over 400m), the Kenyans Hellen Obiri (14 ‘ 22’12 over 5000m), Faith Kipyegon (2’29”15 over 1000m) and Timothy Cheruiyot (3’28’45 over 1500m), the Spaniard Orlando Ortega (13”11 over 110m hurdles) , Swede Armand Duplantis (6m00 pole vault) and Moroccan Soufiane El Bakkali (8’08”04 over 3000m steeplechase) have also established a new MPM. Finally, note the European 1500m record signed Jakob Ingebrigtsen (3’28”68).
