5 Places to Find Water in the Solar System Apart from Earth

Apart from Earth, water can be found on other planets or objects in the Solar System.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – Every living thing needs water because water is the source of life. Apart from Earth, water can be found on other planets or objects in the Solar System. Here are some locations in the Solar System that have water, as reported by Big Think, Sunday (5/9):

1.Mars

Although the idea that Mars is home to large canals filled with enough water to support lush vegetation has been debunked since the 1920s, Mars does have as much water as Lake Superior. Most of the water freezes in the polar ice caps and some other water can be found in the atmosphere.

Liquid water exists only in small lakes under glaciers at the poles. Identified via radar, the lake is 1.5 kilometers beneath the ice sheet and is thought to remain liquid by the anti-freezing properties of some minerals in Martian soil.

2.Europe

One of Jupiter’s moons, Europa is famous for its dense icy surface and the ocean that stretches beneath its surface. The ice crust on the planet is estimated to range in thickness from a few thousand meters to 30 kilometers.

The ocean below is estimated to be 100 kilometers deep with some of it probably a mixture of liquid near the top and most of it liquid below.

If true, this would mean that Europa has nearly three times as much water in all of Earth’s oceans. This vast ocean, which is kept warm by Europa’s volcanic core and the effects of tidal forces on the moon from Jupiter, is considered a possible habitat for extraterrestrial life. Ventilation, similar to hydrothermal vents on Earth can provide energy and conditions for life in an environment that has never even seen the sun.
