5 early signs of cervical cancer to watch out for

In 2021 alone, 947 women in the Netherlands were diagnosed with cervical cancer. You may also know someone who has been diagnosed with the disease. How do you recognize the first signals yourself?

Cervical cancer

Cervical cancer occurs mainly in women between the ages of 35 and 55. That is why, from the age of thirty to sixty, you will receive an invitation from the population screening every five years to take a smear. That is one of the most important ways to detect cervical cancer as early as possible. If you suffer from one or more of the following signs, it is also wise to make an appointment with your doctor.

1. Vaginal bleeding

Do you experience unusual vaginal bleeding between periods, after menopause or after sex? Then that is one of the first symptoms that may indicate cervical cancer. It could also indicate another physical condition, such as an STD, but it’s still important to get it checked out.

2. Pain during sex

There are several reasons why you may experience pain during intercourse. Maybe you’re not aroused enough or there are other mental and/or physical reasons why it’s painful. If you have pain in combination with other symptoms mentioned in this article, it is important to consult a doctor.

3. Change in secretion

You may notice that during the month your discharge changes color, smell and substance. If major changes persist, such as a foul odor and/or red/pink discharge, this may indicate cervical cancer.

4. Decreased appetite/unexplained weight loss

Again, there are different explanations if your appetite decreases and if you suddenly lose a lot of weight, without being aware of it. It does not necessarily indicate cervical cancer – it could also be something else – but it is nevertheless important to keep an eye on it and to raise it with a doctor.

5. Pelvic or back pain

Maybe your abs aren’t as strong as before, you lifted too heavy or didn’t lie comfortably. There are several reasons why you may have pain in your back or pelvis. If the pain cannot be explained, it is wise to sound the alarm.
