5 Complementary Diseases at High Risk for Covid-19 Patients

BANDA ACEH – The Covid-19 pandemic or corona virus is currently occurring in many countries, including Indonesia and of course also in Aceh. Many patients who contract this virus must receive care and treatment in the hospital. Not infrequently it also causes death, especially in the elderly. But not only from the age factor, comorbidities also make a person susceptible to this corona virus.

Internal Medicine Specialist, Dr. Hendra Zufry SpPD-KEMD FINASIM said that related to comorbidities, a number of diseases that have a higher risk of Covid-19 patients can be mapped.

“The first is heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, and other chronic lung diseases, because the dominance of Covid-19 attacks the upper respiratory tract and lungs. Then chronic kidney disorders, chronic liver diseases, diseases that affect the immune system such as cancer, lupus, and other diseases that use these drugs and drugs also affect the body’s systems, “explained Dr. Hendra when he was a resource person in the Serambi Program. Health Talk Edition Podcast broadcast live via Facebook Serambinews.com, Monday (26/10/2020).

He added that, if sorted from the comorbidities, then the first position is heart disease, followed by hypertension, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, and lung.

“We know the prevalence of heart cases in Aceh is number 1 in Indonesia. Hypertension is also the highest in Indonesia, diabetes number 4 in Indonesia. Kidney failure is also like that very high, and lung disease, including tuberculosis, and other chronic lung diseases, the rates are almost the same, “he said.

If there are individuals who have two comorbidities at once such as diabetes and heart disease, or diabetes and chronic lung disease, diabetes and hypertension, you can imagine that the mortality (death) and morbidity (the level of illness and being healthy in a population) will be much higher .

It explains, when an individual has one or more participant diseases, then the individual has consequences for Covid-19.

First, the consequences are becoming more susceptible to Covid-19. There is an entry route that makes it easier for the germ to land on its seat, then it can multiply.

Second, because this enters a foreign body, these comorbidities affect the immune system. This second condition makes the morbidity of the Covid-19 severity more severe for patients with comorbidities.

“So I said that the spectrum is very broad, it starts to enter and becomes sticky more easily until it leads to a higher mortality rate in the comorbid disease group,” he said.

He appealed to patients with comorbidities in addition to maintaining the Covid-19 health protocol properly, they should also carry out consultation and treatment of accompanying diseases properly..(a)
