The Northerners have been suffocating for a few days now. In Lomme, in the small living room of his apartment Jean-Pierre closes its shutters. “If we don’t close the shutters, it’s dead”, explains the man who does everything to keep his interior cool. In a situation of disability, the man lives alone in an HLM and the days are difficult. “I need a third person to get off my electric wheelchair, so I have to stay at home”, where it is “dark, as if we were imprisoned”he said.
On the top floor of the building, “it’s a furnace, it’s unbearable”, says Carl. “The higher it is, the more it hits”, adds the young man of 18 years who also lives complicated days with his mother, Sylvie. Forced to sleep on his sofa, he claims not to be able to fall asleep before 6 a.m., as the temperatures remain high all night.
Mother and son then flee the apartment to shopping centers or elsewhere. “I go to friends, there I can’t take it anymore”, explains Sylvie. “I stay as long as I’m accepted and it’s complicated”. Very complicated situation also on the mental level with the apprehension of a new temperature record.
