40 percent more corona tests taken, percentage of positive tests decreased | NOW

Municipal health services (GGDs) conducted 140,432 corona tests in the past week, an increase of about 40 percent from previous weeks. The percentage of people tested who received a positive test result fell by 1 percentage point to 2.5 percent.

In the previous weeks, that percentage was around 3.5 percent, while at the end of July it was still 1 to 2.3 percent.

The percentage of this week can also shift slightly. The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) will only announce the official number of confirmed infections from last week on Tuesday. So far, the RIVM reported 3,552 new cases of illness in the past week.

Since the testing policy was expanded in June, more than a million Dutch people have now been tested for the corona virus. A total of 1,018,023 tests were conducted.

Corona tests administered and percentage of positive tests:

  • July 27 – August 2: 101,905 tests, of which 2,588 were positive (2.5 percent)
  • August 3-9: 98,978 tests, of which 3,466 positive (3.5 percent)
  • August 10 – 16: 102,487 tests, of which 4,036 positive (3.6 percent)
  • 17 – 23 August: 140,432 tests, of which + – 3,552 positive (2.5 percent)
  • Last week’s figures are a preliminary estimate, as official figures will follow Tuesday

Busy at test streets is increasing: ‘Only get tested in case of complaints’

Due to the crowds at the test streets, the Ministry of Health and the GGDs emphasize again on Monday that corona tests must be taken from people who have complaints.

According to the ministry, the test streets are under pressure due to the increasing interest in corona tests. The GGD GHOR wrote on Twitter this weekend that a test appointment may have been a day later due to the crowds. In some regions, 60 percent more tests were administered than in previous weeks.

Both parties expect that even more corona tests will be conducted every week in the near future, due to the increasing number of respiratory complaints in the autumn. “The capacity within the test chain will be further expanded in view of the expected growth,” said the ministry.

Where necessary, it is examined how the expanded testing policy can be used more effectively. For example, it is being investigated how effective it is to have travelers returning from orange or red areas tested for the corona virus immediately.
