4 tips for a successful vegetable garden

I received many, many questions on my Instagram account at the start of the year. For the most part, you don’t want to miss the steps to successful vegetable gardening this year. I will therefore take advantage of this column to answer your questions!

Marie: Hello Pierre, you told us about a germination technique for sweet potato but another technique exists by cutting pieces to make them germinate, can you tell me more?

There are actually two methods for making sweet potato plants, the first of which consists of taking a sweet potato and putting the lower part in water using toothpicks. The lower part is recognizable thanks to its pointed shape! We do not forget then to keep the level of the water and to place it in a bright and airy room.

But, it’s not always easy to find the meaning of a sweet potato and if you take it the wrong way, you risk wasting it! Another technique therefore consists in cutting pieces of sweet potato of about 5 cm with flesh and skin, you place your pieces with the flesh part in contact with the soil. You keep the soil always moist then you place your tray in a ventilated, bright and heated room, at least 20°C!

Christophe: Are there more resistant varieties for potato cultivation?

That’s a very good question ! So, it seems that Charlotte and Désirée are more resistant to mildew attacks. I say well, it seems because I have never had a problem with mildew on my potatoes. To do this, remember to space your tubers well when planting, between 30 and 40 cm between each potato and 70 cm between the rows in order to have more air circulation. We avoid watering the foliage as much as possible and finally, we keep the tomatoes away from our potatoes.

Camille: Can you tell us the sowing we are going to do in February to order my seeds?

Ahah, I see that I’m not the only one getting impatient and wanting to get organized, that’s good! In February, it’s the ideal time to sow peppers, peppers, eggplants, lettuces and that’s it! We will wait until March to sow tomatoes, chard or even cabbage in the warm. On the other hand, in March, we can sow broad beans, peas, mangetouts, spinach, radishes in the ground and we can even plant pink garlic and onion bulbs.

Stéphanie: Thanks to your advice, I managed to germinate my avocado seed, but what should I do now?

Stephanie, then it’s up to you, either you put the root in the water and the seed on the surface or you put your seed in the ground. If you want to put it in the ground, I advise you to use a well-draining substrate. Place your seed on the surface of the soil until the stem appears. As soon as the stem of your avocado tree appears, you can add potting soil above it to cover your seed. At first, the soil must always be moist, place your plant if you can in a humid, light and airy room otherwise the leaves may turn brown.
