4 Hospitals in Yogya Develop Covid Drugs from Pure Coconut Oil

Yogyakarta, CNN Indonesia

Four hospitals in Yogyakarta is currently conducting research on corona virus healing therapy (Covid-19) using virgin coconut oil or virgin coconut oil (VCO).

The four hospitals are Dr. Sardjito, RSA UGM, RSUD Wonosari, and RSUD Sleman.

Pulmonology Expert, FKKMK UGM as well as Head of the Airbone Disease Team, Dr. Sardjito, Ika Trisawati said that researchers in various parts of the world continue to make drug discovery efforts to support Covid-19 treatment. One of them uses natural or herbal ingredients, including VCO.

The use of VCO in Covid-19 therapy is motivated by the content in the oil which is known to have good antiviral properties such as lauric acid (C12) and monolaurin (ML) and their derivatives.

“The VCO is medium chain fatty acids (MCA) which contains lauric acid is converted into monoglyceride monolaurin to have an antiviral effect by destroying the viral lipid membrane, “Ika explained in a webinar on Clinical Trials and Covid-19 Management held by the Center for Herbal Medicine, FKKMK UGM, Thursday (15/4).

As in soap, continued Ika, giving an example, VCO works by damaging cell membranes in viruses. VCO that enters the body will be converted into monolaurin which when interacting with the virus cell membrane will damage the lipid layer in these cells.

That way, the virus cell membrane becomes damaged and does not function.

In a pilot study at these four hospitals, Ika revealed significant results (p

In addition, there was a decrease in inflammatory markers including CR, ferritin, and IL6, although they were not statistically significant.

Other findings suggest a significant reduction in D Dimer or protein fragments that appear when blood clots dissolve in the body, as well as a significant reduction in ferritin (p.

“VCO can reduce inflammatory markers in sufferers of Covid-19 so it is hoped that it can prevent aggravation of the disease,” he explained.

Deputy for Supervision of Traditional Medicines, Health Supplements and Cosmetics at BPOM, Reri Indriani, added that there is an abundance of natural ingredients with more than 30 thousand plant species in Indonesia.

Research data on Medicines and Jamu shows, of the existing plant species, 2,848 of them are medicinal plants spread across 405 ethnicities in 34 provinces.

“The potential of Indonesia’s natural ingredients provides a great opportunity to be used as herbal products, as well as standardized herbal medicines and phyto-pharmacy, including as an adjuvant therapy for Covid-19,” he added.

BPOM, he continued, is accompanying herbal research related to Covid-19. So far there have been 15 studies using natural ingredients. Two of the clinical trials have been completed.

In detail, 4 studies were in the clinical trial stage; 5 research on clinical trial protocol preparation stage; 1 pre-clinical trial phase research; and 3 studies in the pre-clinical trial protocol preparation stage. For pre-clinical trials it is intended as anti-inflammatory, endurance, anti-pyretic and anti-Covid-19.

Reri conveyed that there were several lessons that could be learned during the process. For example, the problem of finding a model animal that is able to fully describe the pathophysiology of Covid-19 in humans during preclinical testing.

The clinical trial stage is also not an easy matter when it is carried out in the midst of a pandemic, considering that many factors can affect the validity of the final results. Other issues include sample size, subject population, to subject categories.

Not to mention the various clinical manifestations of Covid-19 patients, which require researchers to be more careful in determining the operational definition of clinical symptom improvement.

With the large potential of existing natural ingredients, emphasized Reri, the discovery and development of herbal medicine needs to be continuously pushed to the point of product downstreaming. It also needs support and synergy, including from academics and universities.

“BPOM will always be present to support the downstream efforts of natural medicinal products,” he said.
