RKI reports 26,923 new corona infections – almost 700 dead
The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) reported 26,923 new corona infections early Thursday morning. That was 13.7 percent more than on Thursday morning a week ago, when the RKI reported 23,679 new infections within one day. The trend of increasing numbers of new infections thus continues.
A possible effect of the hard lockdown that has been in place since Wednesday is only expected in a few days. Meanwhile, the RKI reported 698 deaths within 24 hours in connection with the virus. 4,833 Covid-19 patients were treated intensively in the intensive care units early Thursday morning. The day before, there were 102 fewer at the same time.
Patient advocates warn of possible triage in hospitals
In view of the increasingly scarce ventilation places in the intensive care units of German hospitals, patient advocates are urgently warning against making the treatment of Covid-19 sufferers dependent on their chances of survival. “In this country the principle applies that the sickest patient is helped first,” said the board of the German Foundation for Patient Protection, Eugen Brysch, the newspapers of the Funke media group (Thursday editions). The situation is different with so-called triage, “it turns the ethical principle on its head”.
In the case of triage, “those whose chances of survival are better will only be helped,” said Brysch. German doctors have not yet had to use this procedure, as there are “sufficient medical resources for all seriously ill” patients. Despite the very different, regional corona situation, there are “free intensive care places” available in every federal state.
“The situation is serious, but beware of alarmism,” warned the patient advocate. Even if “the intensive care beds are completely occupied in a city, there is currently no reason to let people die without care”. An intensive medical transport by helicopter or ambulance must prevent such a situation.
The managing director of the German Hospital Association (DKG), Georg Baum, sees the clinics in Germany as far from having to lead triage discussions. There are still reserves, said Baum to the sparkle leaves. “Until all capacities are used up in purely mathematical terms, the number of active infections would have to double,” said Baum.
