Jakarta –
Australia just made sure to appear on 2022 World Cup. The Socceroos are the 31st nation to seal a place in Qatar, which means there’s only one more empty seat left!
Australia’s qualification was achieved thanks to victory over Peru in the final of the intercontinental playoff which was held at the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium, Ar Rayyan, Tuesday (14/6/2022) early morning WIB. After playing a goalless draw for 120 minutes, Mathew Ryan et al finally won 5-4 on penalties.
With that result, Australia is officially the 31st country that will compete in the World Cup which starts next November. They also ensured that the Asian continent had six representatives. Previously, there were Japan, South Korea, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the host Qatar who qualified first.
In addition to these six countries, there are 13 countries from Europe, four countries from South America, five countries from Africa, and three countries from the North & Central America zone that have secured a place in the biggest four-year event. The number is now 31 countries.
Costa Rica and New Zealand will fight for the remaining one ticket in another intercontinental playoff match which will also be held at Al Rayyan on Wednesday (15/6) at 01.00 WIB. The division of the 2022 World Cup group was carried out in April. Australia will join group D with France, Denmark and Tunisia.
