Malaysia will lift many of its COVID-19 restrictions from 1 May. One of them is that masks are no longer required when outside the room.

Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin assessed the trend of Malaysia’s COVID-19 cases over the past few weeks. The previous peak of Omicron cases was in March with more than 30,000 infections per day.

What are the relaxed COVID-19 restrictions?

Travelers are not required to test for COVID-19

Travelers or tourists who wish to enter Malaysia are no longer required to attach a negative COVID-19 test result. As long as they have received the complete COVID-19 vaccine, namely two doses.

Mask free

Starting next week, Malaysia is getting closer to normal life before COVID-19 as the obligation to wear masks is officially lifted. However, this policy only applies outside the room. While indoor activities are still required to wear masks, such as in shopping centers and public transportation.

“The use of masks outdoors is optional, but still recommended,” Khairy said at a press conference Wednesday (27/4).

No Need To Check In My Prosperity

My Sejahtera is an application similar to PeduliLindung that functions as a screening for COVID-19 and unvaccinated groups. The Malaysian government no longer requires checking in via the app.

Even so, Malaysians can still use the My Sejahtera app to report COVID-19 test results and view their health assessment while in quarantine.

Quoted from Channel News Asia, 68.1 percent of the adult population has completed booster vaccination or about more than 16 million people. Meanwhile, the coverage of the second dose of COVID-19 vaccination has reached 97.6 percent.

Since the start of the pandemic, Malaysia has reported more than 4.4 million cases of COVID-19, with more than 35,500 deaths.
