28 Summer tires in the ADAC test: which one can you trust?

After devastating results last year, the ADAC tested twelve summer tires for SUVs and vans. How do you do this time? Also in the test: 16 popular summer tires for the compact class.

The SUV and Golf class consistently occupy the top spots on the sales charts. Which summer tires are the best for these cars? The ADAC has now tested this.

Tires for SUVs and vans

The first test focus of the ADAC is twelve tires for mid-size SUVs and vans (size: 235/55 R17) – for two good reasons:

  • These models are sold particularly often.
  • Last year tires of size 215/65 R16C (including for SUVs and vans) were tested – with devastating results (nine times “poor”). They offered insufficient security, especially in dangerous situations.

So what grades do SUV tires get in the new test? The focus is on four aspects:

  • How safe are the tires?
  • What driving characteristics do they offer?
  • How much do they pollute or protect the environment (fuel consumption)?
  • How economical are they (wear and tear)?

The clear result: SUV drivers should choose tire size 235/55 R17 from this year’s test. With one exception, these tires performed “well” or “satisfactorily” – and thus far better than the tires in the previous year’s test.

The four best SUV tires offer a lot of safety on wet and dry roads. You keep the fuel consumption within limits. And they don’t wear out too quickly.

Its particularly high mileage makes the Michelin Primacy 4 the test winner. The worst tire in the test (“poor”) is the Laufenn S-Fit EQ (103 euros). When wet, it is a total failure.

Tires for the golf class

In addition, 18-inch tires were tested for the Golf class (size: 225/40 R18). This format is one of the best-selling for summer tires. The ADAC experts also recommend four models in this size:

The Continental is not the first choice when it is dry, but it has very short braking distances. The Pirelli P Zero offers good driving characteristics, but significantly increases fuel consumption and wears out very quickly. This makes it particularly suitable if you are rarely behind the wheel.

The Rotalla Setulla S-Pace RU 01 (81 euros) only scores “sufficient”.

Tip for buying tires

Four times “good” – the test marks show that there is also a lot of choice among suitable tires. Nevertheless, every tire has certain strengths and weaknesses. One offers a lot of driving comfort, but wears out quickly. Others save a lot of fuel, but they bump a little more. Therefore, when buying, pay attention to which top tire suits you best. Simply look at the individual ratings of the ADAC testers.
