2,700 Years Old Toilet Found in Israel, Only Crazy Rich Owns

Jerusalem

Old times, toilet turns out to determine a person’s wealth status. An ancient latrine in Jerusalem is proof of that.

Recently, a team of Israeli archaeologists managed to find a latrine or toilet (water closet) which is believed to be a relic of a civilization that lived 2,700 years ago.

Reportedly Associated Press, Tuesday (5/10/2021), Israeli authorities who specialize in dealing with historical objects confirmed that the latrine was found in a rectangular cubicle in the ruins of a luxury residence. The location overlooks the ‘Old City’, the nickname for Jerusalem.

The latrine is said to have a comfortable design to sit on. Underneath, there is a deep septic tank.

“The private toilet in the chamber is a rare relic. Only a few have been found to date,” said Yaakov Billig, who led the excavation mission.

This fact indicates that only a handful of people at that time had latrines. “Only the rich can afford it,” Yaakov said.

Quoting a well-known rabbi, he said that the people who deserved the status of wealth at that time were those who had “a closet by his desk.”

The objects found in the septic tank helped strengthen the rabbi’s statement. For example, animal bones and cutlery.

Archaeologists also found pillars from buildings from that period as well as what is believed to be a former orchid garden, complete with a fountain. This is also proof that those who live in the area are wealthy people.
