Asunción: The administrative director of the Institute for Rural Development (Indert), Diego de los Ríos, asked an applicant for USD 20,000 for number 1 and USD 5,000 for him to solve a problem with the title of a property in the Chaco.
One of the recorded audio messages that the public prosecutor’s office has in their hands about the corruption scandal is a conversation that the Indian administration director has with the informer.
“Number one asked me that you do him a favor to close the case or if not, let’s leave it at that” is the first warning Diego de los Ríos gives. With number one he refers to the president of the Indian, Mario Vega, who, like him, is no longer part of the agency’s staff.
He then said “the president is asking for $ 20,000 and he wants another 5,000”. The informer replied that he can only call up to $ 20,000 because he took out a mortgage on his house. “25 from the Americans and I’ll give you the title faster than a rooster can scream kikeriki,” said de los Ríos.
According to investigating prosecutor Rodrigo Estigarribia, the payment was made in contrast to the US $ 200,000 that de los Ríos and Vega demanded from another deal that did not come to fruition.
