24 school structures and 456 closed classes

It was to be expected. The tightening of the health protocol for schools in Moselle in order to cope with the outbreak of Covid cases has at the same time caused an outbreak of class closures. As a reminder: since Monday, classes have been systematically closed from the moment a student is positive for Covid or that there is simply contact of a positive case. Enough to explode the number of class closures? Yes and no. A week ago, Thursday February 11, the Moselle had 5 school structures and 48 closed classes. This Wednesday, the first figure was multiplied by nearly 5, with 24 closures including 20 schools, 2 colleges (in Vitry-sur-Orne and Bouzonville) and 2 private establishments: Jean XXIII in Montigny-lès-Metz and Saint- Pierre Chanel in Thionville. Including these closures brings the number of closed classes to 456. The vast majority of these cases are concentrated in the Moselle furrow and in a sector of Moselle East from Bouzonville to Forbach.

“A very moderate number”

“It’s relatively low,” said Olivier Cottet. The academic director of the national education services (Dasen) is keen to put these figures into perspective: “In the first level, we have 197 classes out of 4,106 closed, or 4.79%. In the second degree, there are 259 out of 3,485, or 7.5%. This is a very moderate number compared to the sum of classes that we have and taking into account the very strong precautionary principle that is applied, since we now treat each contact case in Moselle by eviction, as if it were potentially carrier of the South African variant. “

Beyond the continuity of learning, Olivier Cottet sees another major interest in the non-closure of schools this week: “This allows us to actively participate in tracing, since we invite all contacts to go and get tested. This would not have been possible if the structures had closed. One way of responding to those who believe that schools are mainly involved in brewing the virus.
