Novak Djokovic secures 22nd Grand Slam title!

The Serb wins the final of the Australian Open against Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas in three sets 6: 3, 7: 6, 7: 6.

Djokovic is catching up with Grand Slam record champion Rafael Nadal. Both now have 22 major titles. He is followed by Roger Federer with 20 Grand Slam victories. And there’s more: The 35-year-old also takes over the top of the ATP ranking from the injured Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz.

After the triumph, Djokovic climbs into his team’s box. And there the emotions overwhelm him. All dams break. The Serb sinks to the ground, completely devastated, crying and sobbing.

Who is the greatest tennis player of all time?

Although Djokovic only gives up one set throughout the tournament, his path to the title is paved with obstacles: he is under close observation because of the events of the previous year. Partially accused of acting due to his thigh problems. Defends against allegations of an allegedly illegal toilet break and publicly defends his father over an incident with a pro-Russian viewer group.

However, Djokovic puts everything away. “In my case, I feel like things are piling up for one reason or another,” he says. It’s “not an ideal situation” to have to deal with such things off the field, “but it’s part of my life”. He’s trying to take advantage of it.

Novak Djokovic in three sets to victory

Nole starts furiously against Tsitsipas. He manages the break early on. After just 36 minutes, Djokovic bagged the first set 6: 3.

Then the game becomes more competitive. Tsitsipas is now increasingly able to put the Serbs under pressure. When the score is 4: 5, Djokovic has to fend off a set ball. The decision is only made in the tie-break. In this Djokovic benefits from a Tsitsipas who does not show his best tennis.

In the third set, the Greek immediately managed a break. But Djokovic finds the right answer and creates the rebreak. Again it goes into the tiebreak and there the Serb keeps the upper hand. After exactly three hours he uses his third match point and secures his tenth title in Australia.
