212 years in prison for insurance fraudsters in California | Currently America | DW

In the trial of the 45-year-old family man, the California federal judge John F. Walter found harsh words: The accused was a “greedy and brutal murderer” who had carried out an “evil and diabolical plan”. Judge Walter imposed the maximum sentence of 212 years in prison.

According to the indictment, the Egyptian man deliberately drove his car into the water in the port of Los Angeles in April 2015. He himself could get to safety through the open window of his car. His belted, severely disabled sons, aged eight and 13, drowned. His ex-wife, who was also in the car, was able to break free. The non-swimmer only survived because a fisherman threw her a buoy. The couple’s third son was not in the car.

The family man said it was an accident. He was arrested in 2018 and found guilty of fraud and money laundering a year later.

“Teuflischer Plan”

As the prosecution pointed out, the man bought life insurance policies for himself and his family from eight insurance companies between July 2012 and March 2013. The total value was three million dollars. He then waited until the two-year minimum period for all insurance companies had expired.

He raked in more than $ 260,000 after the death of his children. He used the money to buy real estate in Egypt, his country of origin, and to buy a boat.
