The Port of Shanghai, consistently the world’s busiest container port for 15 years, achieved a milestone in 2024 by handling 51.5 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) – the first port globally to exceed 50 million TEUs annually. Through the first three quarters of 2024, the port processed 41.5 million TEUs.
Shanghai’s airports also experienced growth, handling 100 million passenger trips and 3.29 million tons of cargo and mail in the first three quarters of the year, representing increases of 8.04% and 6.72% respectively.
Future development includes expanding Shanghai Pudong International Airport and constructing the Shanghai East Railway Station, which will create a major integrated transportation hub connecting high-speed rail, urban rail, metro lines, buses, and the airport, Yu concluded.
