Canada is in talks with its European allies, including Spain and Germany, about exporting oil and gas from its east coast to ease energy shortages and provide an alternative to Europe’s Russian energy imports, Foreign Minister Melanie Joly said on Wednesday.

“It is important that Canada is able to move forward and help our European friends who are dealing with very difficult energy realities,” Joly told reporters.

“We have to do it in such a way that we also deal with the issue of climate change. And it is precisely these talks that we are currently having with the Germans and also with the Spaniards,” she said.

After Moscow invaded Ukraine, Germany rushed out of Russian energy imports and is looking for alternative supply routes and energy sources.

Canada and Germany are in talks over options to export liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Europe through a terminal on Canada’s east coast, Reuters reported on Tuesday, citing a German government official.

Talks between German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau took place this week at the Group of Seven economic powerhouse summit.

Canada, the sixth largest natural gas producer in the world, currently has no LNG facilities on the east coast.

Canada’s Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson told Reuters in May that Ottawa was considering accelerating two proposed LNG export projects on the east coast – Spanish company Repsol’s LNG plant in New Brunswick and Pieridae Energy’s proposed LNG plant Goldboro in Nova Scotia.
