2020 can’t be over soon enough, don’t you think? 2021 will be the year of?

Generation gap

You will not have missed it, but soon the PlayStation 5 in Xbox Series X/S from. By now it was time for that. Both Sony and Microsoft saw that Nintendo took almost all the credit and sales since the release of the Nintendo Switch. And yes, the PlayStation and Xbox were fortunately still able to compete on major ‘blockbusters’ such as Cyberpunk 2077, Marvel Avengers and so on, but the lack of exclusives became increasingly difficult. Just look at Animal Crossing’s success this year alone.

Nevertheless, we have seen the same pattern over the past generations. Nintendo’s consoles are ahead of (or behind just how you want to see it) the competition. The launches are always successful, until Sony and Microsoft announce a new console. I am personally very curious how the Nintendo Switch will fare. There was a generation gap with the Wii and WiiU. Gamers saw the updated graphics and games of the new PlayStation or Xbox and completely ignored the ‘old’ Nintendo. There are more factors, such as a good marketing strategy and a solid line-up, but this generation thing strikes me again and again. It doesn’t seem to be a coincidence anymore.

A good example was the pre-order day of the PlayStation. At the same time, the release of Super Mario 3D All-Stars also fell on this day. So I walked to my local game store at the end of the day to pick up this Switch game. When I arrived at the checkout, I saw an exhausted boy standing there, so I asked him, “So you’ve been busy with all those Super Mario 3D All-Stars pre-orders?” He said, ‘No, you’re crazy, I’m devastated by all those pre-orders on PlayStation 5 games and the console itself’. The beginning of the end for the Nintendo Switch?

It’s all about games

Ultimately, it’s all about games and Nintendo has hopefully learned from that. The Wii, for example, had a pretty strong lineup of games, also later in the cycle. On the other hand, that went completely wrong with the WiiU. Unfortunately, I don’t see a green light for system sellers in 2021 with the Nintendo Switch, although I think Nintendo still has something in store. However?

At Sony and Microsoft, there is and should in any case be a shot. We could see that it is not going to happen in 2020, but 2021 is very promising. Beautiful images of it Spider-Man, refreshment with Kena, stunning images of Power and of course a new one Halo (postponed). Just to name a few examples. So Nintendo knows what to do; come up with system sellers, also in 2021.

De Switch Pro

It would be the first time in a generation that Nintendo is breaking the vicious circle. The arrival of one Switch Pro rumors remain for now, but it would be such a good move from Nintendo. Third-party developers can still keep developing for the Switch, and gamers will keep their interest due to the hopefully updated interior of the console. The only thing that could become a problem is the lack of games. Since its launch in 2017, the Nintendo Switch has actually had all the major franchises. So I’m very curious what Nintendo will come up with in 2021. If I can make some predictions; a The Legend of Zelda 3D All-Stars, a new F-Zero / Star-Fox or an open world Donkey Kong game.

Whatever choices Nintendo makes, they are important. More attention will be paid to the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X / S. That’s why Nintendo has to come up with something big, otherwise the same thing will happen as with the Wii and the WiiU. Not that the Nintendo Switch is doing badly, but that may change. Unless Nintendo releases that new Donkey Kong !!!

No kidding, I hope my view of the game world has been able to enrich you. If not, or if you don’t get it at all, let us know! Also check out my previous column about the discussion of whether gaming is good for you. I will certainly come back to that in a next column.
