2021 Is A New 1984 – The Guardian

Is the world on the brink of a big war?

British journalists saw in the events of 2021 the embodiment of the worst visions of George Orwell, described in his 1984 novel.

George Orwell’s 1984 novel is a legendary dystopia. British edition The Guardian draws parallels between current events in the world and the events described in the book.

“2021 is the new year 1984,” asks the publication.

Dividing the world

Orwell wrote of a world divided geographically, politically and militarily into three rival superpowers: Oceania (North America plus Great Britain), Eurasia (Russia and Europe), and Eastasia (China).

Orwell’s prediction of an endless three-sided global confrontation turned out to be premature. China needed time to develop. The Soviet Union eventually collapsed. The United States, proclaiming the unipolar moment, declared its victory. Nevertheless, today, by some standards, Orwell’s tripartite world is eventually taking shape.

Russia has been stepping up military pressure on Ukraine, while China is rattling weapons around Taiwan. Russia and China are becoming ever closer allies. “While there is no evidence of direct collusion over Ukraine and Taiwan, Presidents Putin and Xi are undoubtedly fully aware of each other’s actions, which have an identical, mutually reinforcing effect: to intimidate the untested US administration of Joe Biden,” the newspaper said.

Ukraine and Taiwan

Putin has not forgotten how George W. Bush pledged undying support to Georgia’s new democratic government in 2005 and then backed off when war broke out with Russia in 2008.

As analyst Ted Galen Carpenter noted, the Biden White House also reaffirmed “the unwavering US support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity in the face of Russia’s ongoing aggression in Donbas and Crimea.” “At best, this statement looks like a hostage of fortune, and at worst, like a cruel deception,” the article says.

“The parallels between Washington’s over-encouragement of Ukraine and Bush’s misstep on Georgia are bleak and unsettling,” Carpenter said. He suggested that the US and NATO are no more ready for a war with Russia over eastern Ukraine than to save South Ossetia. And if they do it, then it will be the third world war.

This is where the truly global danger lies – in the vague gap between words and deeds in the intensifying tripartite struggle between the superpowers. Will Putin, incited by the “killer” – an insult from Biden’s lips – and numerous intractable arguments, try to catch the US president bluffing? And – on the other side of the world – will Xi try?

Reuniting with Taiwan would seal Xi’s legacy. Increasingly close personal, strategic and military ties with Putin’s Russia mean that he will not face opposition from that side and will receive some applause. Taiwanese vow to fight, but cannot win alone. Only the Americans stand in the way of Xi.

“An Orwellian nightmare for Biden and the West would be a simultaneous Russian invasion of Ukraine and a Chinese attack on Taiwan. Oceania’s choice: war on two fronts or humiliation on all sides. Welcome to the world of Winston, the main character of 1984 “, – concludes the author of the publication.
