In this horrible 2020 we have all had to learn to live differently than we were used to. The past year has been described by some as “the worst year of all time.” I think there have been worse as in the case of Europe during the great wars of the 20th century or for people individually.
We had to learn to work, study, greet us, hug us and love us “on line”, in addition to spending months locked up and for the majority away from their loved ones. We watched helplessly on the news as thousands of people died and we were unable to do anything. There we saw the gratitude of the well-born Chapines to all the health workers, doctors, nurses, nurses, technicians who work until exhaustion, with our applause or singing the National Anthem from the terraces and balconies of the houses, as a recognition to that tireless work to save lives. Also in this Annus Horribilis We saw the empty streets Only the essential shops open and us having to go to the car bank or ask the pharmacies for medicines at home. Also all with the masks that make us look silly or strange. We saw on television “the city that never sleeps”, the vast and beloved New York empty like Paris, Rome or Madrid, all due to the arrival of the Covid 19 coronavirus, “courtesy” of the Chinese for whom “life does not it is worth nothing ”, in the end there are thirteen hundred million people, who live like ants and thus can also die since for them they are only a statistic.
But also in the United States of America we saw the stupid murder of George Floyd which generated the “Black Lives Matters” that caused incalculable losses, destruction of monuments that are part of the history of that country, threatening to lead to a civil war. We learned about the world about losses that saddened us, such as the death of Sean Connery, the famous James Bond 007, or Armando Manzanero.
In Guatemala apart from the Pandemic and the storms “Eta e Iota ”, that have left losses and desolation equal to or greater than Covid 19. There are individuals who dream of the fall of President Giammattei and lovers of the conspiracy theory absurdly put Vice President “Willy” Castillo as an accomplice of such a conspiracy. In their opium dreams they dream of repeating the formula that worked with Otto Pérez and Roxana Baldetti in 2015. They have even mentioned names of the new left, neo Marxists, to supplant the President. These opium dreamers, both on the right and on the left, forget that in Guatemala there are four factors to take into account in order to oust a president and these are the churches, the “Embassy”, the CACIF and above all the Army and none of these want to dump the President. 2020 was a year to forget.
