Huawei has confirmed that in the Chinese version of its own Android article EMUI 9 no longer allow alternative launcher, as the website XDA Developers reported. Developers of accessibility launchers can have them enabled by the manufacturer.

This restriction explicitly concerns only the Chinese version of EMUI - who uses a "Global ROM" is not affected. According to Huawei, this step is aimed at user safety. Apparently some Chinese distributors deliver the smartphones with preinstalled launcher. These then displayed some advertisements, installed software without being asked or slowed down the phone dramatically.

According to XDA Developers, Xiaomi was previously affected by similar problems. However, Huawei could have allowed normal launcher developers to get their software certified.

Huawei no longer supports unlocking the bootloader. So users can not just install a custom ROM anymore.
