President Donald Trump said in March that the government would have done very well if the total number of corona deaths in his country could be limited to 100,000 or 200,000. In the country of nearly 330 million residents, 100,000 people had died from Covid-19 by the end of May.

Trump said at the time that without measures, approximately 2.2 million Americans could die from the virus. He has since been criticized for the (lack of) corona policy in the US. Trump recently acknowledged that he knew early on how dangerous the virus is, but deliberately downplayed it.

“The fact that we haven’t even gotten close to that number is proof that the president has taken immediate action,” a White House spokesman said on Tuesday. According to Kayleigh McEnany, Trump has expressed remorse over the deaths throughout the pandemic. “It keeps him awake at night. This president has taken this incredibly seriously. ”

The worldwide death toll from the virus has risen to nearly 966,000, according to the university in Baltimore. Brazil (more than 137,000), India (almost 89,000) and Mexico (almost 74,000) follow the US leader.

More than 6.8 million infections have been diagnosed in the US, which puts the country ahead of India and Brazil. Russia is in fourth place by a long distance.
