A 20-year-old Norwegian boy died on Tuesday in a speed-riding accident on the north face of the Aiguille du Midi in the Mont-Blanc massif in France. The information is reported by our colleagues from La Voix du Nord. Speed-riding, an extreme sport in vogue in the high mountains, combines a small paraglider type sail with skis, in order to be able to alternate flight and gliding phases, going as fast as possible when you stay on the ground.
“We were alerted to the accident around 1:00 pm,” the Chamonix High Mountain Gendarmerie Platoon told La Voix du Nord. Supported by the samu, the victim unfortunately could not be resuscitated. According to France 3, it was a young Norwegian but the High Mountain Gendarmerie Platoon preferred not to confirm the nationality at this stage, the family of the victim not having been notified.
The accident is said to have occurred following “a pilot error”. An investigation was opened to determine the precise circumstances of the accident.
