20 minutes – “Zurich has a massive problem with mice”

Mice run through a shop, mice run through a restaurant. Videos of rodents keep appearing in the city of Zurich. Disgust triggers readers’ reporters. The latest cases are the underground Coop branch at Stadelhofen station and the Rice Up pop-up restaurant on Bahnhofstrasse, which has been closed since February. The restaurant hit the headlines in December 2018 due to a mouse problem.

Have you ever seen mice in a restaurant or shop?

Upon request, Coop will confirm the discovery of a mouse in the branch at Stadelhofen station. However, as spokesman Markus Eugster emphasizes, there is no hygiene problem because of this: “When we discovered the animal, we immediately called in a specialized company to control pests. In the meantime the mice have been caught and possible loopholes have been sealed. »

No reports from other tenants

According to Eugster, rodents in the city and especially at train stations are a fundamental topic: «We cannot prevent that. Therefore, one cannot speak of an extraordinary problem at Stadelhofen train station. »

As the SBB says on request, its tenant told Coop that mice had been discovered. “We were in contact with Coop in this regard,” says spokesman Martin Meier. However, no corresponding feedback has been received from other tenants at Stadelhofen station.

«No hordes of mice»

The problems with mice are also confirmed in the rice up. “But there were no mice hordes as it could give the impression,” says Stefan Schmid, Head of Marketing. In addition, the branch on Bahnhofstrasse has not existed since January 31. Like Manor, Rice Up had to move out because of the renovation of the building.

The reason for the problems with the rodents was the old age of the building, said Schmid. “We fought the pests every week. In this way we were able to keep the mice in check to a greater or lesser extent. ”Hygiene was also regularly and voluntarily tested. “A value has never even exceeded the guideline values.”

“There are mice in every city”

Is there a mouse problem in the city? “As in every city, there are mice and rats in Zurich,” says Tabea Geiser, spokeswoman for environmental and health protection in Zurich. The city has no knowledge of a mouse problem. How many buildings are affected is also unknown. There is no notification requirement. The city fights rodents on public land, and on land it is the property of the owners.

According to Geiser, rodents would occur particularly in places with a large food supply. «The greater the available food supply, the better they can reproduce. For this reason, leftover food should be disposed of correctly and, if possible, no birds should be fed in public places, ”says Geiser. Anyone who sees rats or mice can report this via the “Züri wie neu” app.

Not tolerated in food areas

Since mice are important hygiene pests, they should not be tolerated in buildings – especially in food businesses. “The companies or owners should take measures to prevent mice from entering the building,” says Geiser. A professional company for pest control should be commissioned for the control.

Insekta is one such company for pest control. Owner Pascal Frei says that Zurich, but also Bern, have massive problems with mice. Combating them is particularly difficult in old buildings. “There are many holes and continuous pipes in places that are difficult to access, such as in hollow floors.” It is therefore often very expensive to find and seal all loopholes. In addition, the rodents would always bite out new holes.

Catch with traps, but not with cheese

Often only a comprehensive renovation of the building helps against a mouse infestation. A successful fight is also possible with simpler means. “In order to reduce the population, traps are needed first,” says Frei. The mice are attracted with chemical attractants of different tastes. “We don’t use cheese.” The traps are then checked regularly.

The use of poison is also possible. However, there is a risk that the animals will die in inaccessible places and the stench will spread. In addition to traps and poison, the loopholes would also have to be closed. “However, this is often difficult to achieve.” In any case, it is important to react immediately to problems with rodents. «Mice urinate and vomit permanently. That quickly becomes a hygiene problem. »
