During one of the largest evacuation campaigns in Dortmund’s city history, two aerial bombs from World War II were defused on Sunday in the Ruhr area city.
A British five-hundred-dollar bomb was decommissioned in the afternoon, an equally heavy US bomb in the early evening, according to authorities. Due to the defusing in a densely populated inner-city district, around 14,000 residents had to leave their apartments temporarily.
Thousands of people had to vacate apartments
During soil surveys in the Dortmund hospital district, anomalies in the ground were recently identified at a total of four points, which indicated several bomb-blinders from the Second World War. The suspected unexploded ordnance was confirmed on Sunday at two sites, but not at the other two.
After patients were transferred from two clinics to other hospitals on Saturday, thousands of people in the vicinity of the bomb sites had to temporarily vacate their homes on Sunday morning. Residents of retirement homes in the evacuation zone were also affected. Dortmund Central Station was also temporarily closed during the defuse, trains were rerouted.
