20 minutes – Trees and ants block Tesla’s “gigafactory”

The schedule was very tight but it could become untenable. The electric car manufacturer Tesla aimed to see its first European gigafactory come out of the ground near Berlin in 2021. But German justice put a stop to it, Sunday, by ordering to stop cutting trees after the appeal of an association.

Tesla had however received authorization to clear 92 hectares to build its giant factory on a total area of almost 300 hectares, without having yet received the building permit. But the justice system stopped the operation on Thursday because the trees could have all been felled in less than a week. It thus wants to give itself time to decide on the appeal of LONG.

The American company must also dig up numerous colonies of ants using shovels and small excavators to relocate them further, according to the Sddeutsche Zeitung. In addition, it will hang 400 nesting boxes in the region, since deforestation will deprive a certain number of birds of their nests.

Bombs and bats

Finally, an environmental association told the Berliner Zeitung that the bats should be moved during the hibernation to disturb them as little as possible. And last month, seven World War II bombs were detonated at the site.

The gigafactory represents an investment of 4.3 billion francs and is to create 8000 jobs.
