As the safest European airline, the annual security ranking of the Hamburg aviation security office JACDEC places the Spanish Air Europa in third place, ahead of the Finnair (4), the Norwegian Air Shuttle (6), the Dutch Transavia and the Spanish Vueling (10).
Swiss in 51st place
The German Lufthansa subsidiary Eurowings struggled to position 24 with 90.61 percent, but Swiss (51st), Condor (52), Lufthansa (56) and Austrian Airlines (65) ended up in the middle. The example of Lufthansa shows how quickly a good safety record can be influenced by a single event on commercial scheduled flights.
On July 30 in Frankfurt, the Frankfurt airport staff steered a mobile passenger staircase into the rear of a Lufthansa jet. The plane was damaged beyond repair. As there were passengers on board during the accident, the incident had a negative impact on the JACDEC balance sheet.
The JACDEC study records the 100 lines with the greatest traffic performance worldwide – and rewards airlines with years of accident-free flight operations. The fact that Emirates tops the rankings despite a total loss in 2016 is mainly due to the airline’s enormous flight performance.
The IATA figures also reflect that the security level of the entire industry is high. According to the aviation association, airlines carried around 4.5 billion passengers in 2019. During this time, the Aviation Safety Network accident researchers counted 20 commercial plane crashes in which 283 people were killed as passengers or crew on board the aircraft.
