The rail vehicle manufacturer Stadler Rail has been awarded the contract by the British transport authority Nexus for an order for 42 metro trains for the northern English city of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Stadler should also take over the maintenance for up to 35 years.
In total, the order is worth £ 700 million (approximately CHF 887 million), according to a media release on Tuesday. However, the objection period of ten days now begins. The losing bidders can still appeal against the award decision.
The network serves over 300,000 inhabitants
Only after this period could the contracts be legally signed, it is said. At this point in time, Stadler will again provide detailed information about the order.
The Tyne and Wear Metro network, for which the trains are destined, serves not only the city of Newcastle-upon-Tyne with around 300,000 inhabitants, but also the municipalities of Gateshead, South Tyneside, North Tyneside and Sunderland in the Tyne and Wear district in the north-east of England ,
