The passage with wooden ceiling beams from the time of its creation was behind a small wooden door, which most people would have assumed to be a power box, historians explained. He therefore led out of Westminster Hall, the only parliament building that had survived a devastating fire in 1834.

«Ould Ale fan»

After the corridor was bricked up in 1807, it was opened during the reconstruction after the fire and closed again in 1851, experts said. On the walls there are still inscriptions from the 19th century of the bricklayers, including the saying of an obviously big beer lover: “This room was bricked up by Tom Porter, who was a big fan of Ould Ale.”

The passage was discovered during building work after the Second World War, electrical lighting was installed and the small wooden door was used. The small keyhole in the door was quickly forgotten, according to historians – until today.

“It is unbelievable that this passage has been used by so many important people over the centuries,” said Lindsay Hoyle, spokesman for the House of Commons, about the discovery. The famous chronicler of Charles II, Samuel Pepys, and the formally the first Prime Minister of Great Britain, Robert Walpole, are said to have used the passage.
