20 minutes – Researchers hack Tesla with tape

The American cyber security company McAfee went public with a sensational experiment. The company’s researchers succeeded in tricking two self-propelled Tesla models with a manipulated speed limit sign, and persuading them to accelerate to 85 mph instead of the 35 miles per hour allowed by the sign. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology reports.

Are you driving a Tesla?

As the experts demonstrated in their experiment, two simple adhesive strips are sufficient. Thanks to them, the automatic speed control of the Teslas was fooled. The electric cars promptly did not drive at the permitted maximum speed of 35 miles per hour (around 56 km / h), but would have accelerated up to 85 miles per hour (137 km / h) if the researchers had not stopped the experiment beforehand.

Model 3 not affected

Spicy: The researchers only extended the number 3 minimally with adhesive tape. A human eye would still interpret the number as a Tempo 35 zone. However, the Tesla’s MobilEye EyeQ3 camera system no longer recognized three on the label, but an eight.

However, according to the experts, the test only applies to older Teslas. The Tesla Model X (year of construction 2016) and the Model S fell for the adhesive tape trick as soon as the test driver took his foot off the accelerator and the cruise control took over. New vehicles like the Tesla Model 3, however, were not affected by the hack.

The McAfee researchers emphasize that their experiment does not create fear, but rather wants to sensitize customers and manufacturers to potential weak points in the technology. Because: “In the future, these systems are known to take over tasks that people previously perform”.
